Enzo Maresca has confirmed Chelsea will be without Trevoh Chalobah ahead of what he expects to be a 'tricky' encounter against Southampton.

The defender was forced off early into Saturday's narrow away defeat at Aston Villa with an injury to his upper body and, having been assessed over the weekend, will be missing for tomorrow night’s home date with Southampton.

Maresca confirmed the news at his pre-match press conference on Monday morning, with the head coach hoping the Academy graduate could return for our following game, the Conference League clash with Copenhagen on March 6.

‘Trevoh had a check yesterday and he will be [out of action] for around one week to 10 days,’ Maresca explained at his pre-match press conference.

‘On the one hand it’s good that it’s not a big injury but on the other hand, it is a shame because we lose another player to injury.

‘He won’t play against Southampton but we will see how he is for the next one.’

The Blues will aim to get back to winning ways when bottom-of-the-table Saints visit Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.

The performance at Villa Park was much improved, even if the result was ultimately disappointing, and Maresca has called on his players to take the positives from the Midlands into the clash with Ivan Juric’s side.

Our head coach did, however, express the need for taking the game seriously and not focusing on Southampton’s position in the table, with Maresca expecting a tough evening as the Saints search for points in their battle for Premier League survival.

‘From now on, every game and team is playing for something,’ added the Italian. ‘They will all be tough matches.

‘I really think that [it could be tricky vs Southampton]. It's football. I am not saying that for a message, I really believe every game is a tricky game. The differences are so tiny. We need to be focused on how we win the game.

‘We asked for a better performance [than Brighton], and the performance was there. We didn't deserve the final result [vs Aston Villa], but we need to accept that in this moment it's not enough, we need to find something extra to get results.

‘Our duty is to prepare every game to win. From now on, we have 12 games to go and no doubt they are all big games for us.’
