Magdalena Eriksson called for Chelsea Women to be ready for anything ahead of our UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final second leg encounter with Barcelona on Thursday.

The Blues arrive at Camp Nou trailing 1-0 from the first leg at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, where Caroline Graham Hansen’s early strike gives Barcelona a slender advantage heading into the decisive second leg on Thursday evening.

Both sides are fully aware of the prize on offer being a place at the final in Eindhoven in June. It is half-time in the tie and with everything still to play for, Magdalena Eriksson addressed the media alongside manager Emma Hayes on arrival in Spain.

  • The game kicks off at 5.45pm (UK time) and can be watched on the DAZN live stream on our website and app

Our skipper discussed Barcelona’s style of play and what is required to counter those threats, emphasising the need for discipline, intelligence and the ability to adapt to anything that is thrown our way during the course of the match.

‘Barca have a trademark style of play. They are very smart players, they take what you give them and that’s why you have to be on your toes in all areas and ready for anything they throw at us. We know their style, we know it’s possession based.

‘We know they want to keep the ball, drag us out of areas and exploit those areas. For us, it’s about being disciplined, being smart and being ready for anything.’

We showed resilience in defence during the first leg with Maren Mjelde and Jess Carter putting in impressive displays alongside Eriksson on Saturday. The Swedish international commended the ability of the whole squad to stand up and seize their opportunities when they arrive.

‘The nice thing about this team is that we really enjoy these kind of challenges. We have lost two centre-backs to injury who have played a lot this year. People who have trained really hard and done really well behind the scenes are getting the opportunity to show that.

‘I’m excited! I was excited about the other game and I’m excited about tomorrow. I know we can do even better which gives me confidence, but we will have to suffer and we enjoy that.’

A return to the Camp Nou has personal significance for Eriksson who visited the stadium with her father when she was younger. She recalled watching Chelsea play Barcelona and hopes that this time around, she can play a part in helping us overcome the Spaniards to reach Eindhoven.

‘I’ve played in many of these kind of games, it just feels like another game. I just want to get through and reach that final, that has been the biggest focus. I went to the Camp Nou when I was 13 with my dad and we actually saw Chelsea and Barcelona playing.

‘It feels really cool in that sense if you look at the bigger picture. In the small picture, it’s just about winning tomorrow’s game and getting through to the final.’
