Chelsea Women’s captain Magdalena Eriksson is relishing a return to Kingsmeadow where we face Vllaznia in the UEFA Women’s Champions League this Wednesday evening.
The Blues began our group stage campaign in style with a disciplined 1-0 victory away to Paris Saint-Germain on matchday one, with Millie Bright’s first-half volley enough to seal three points which sent out a real statement of intent.
Albanian champions Vllaznia are the visitors to Kingsmeadow on matchday two as we return to familiar territory for the first time since before the international break. They arrive in the capital having lost narrowly to Real Madrid on the opening night of competition.
The players attention turns swiftly to European duties and they were put through their paces on the training pitches at Cobham this morning. Fran Kirby made a welcome appearance and general manager Paul Green confirmed the forward will return to the squad for tomorrow’s fixture.
Ahead of the match, captain Eriksson took questions from the media. The Swede reflected on a successful start to our group stage campaign, citing the importance of defensive solidity and taking our chances in attack.
‘It was a really tough first game to start with, all we really wanted to get out of that game was three points to prove ourselves. Also, considering last year we had a tough group and a tough start to the group stage, our full focus was on getting those three points. I think we did that really well, nullifying their attacking threats, not conceding too many chances and just being clinical going forward.’

Our experience of reaching the final previously has sparked belief within the squad, while falling short at last year’s group phase was a learning curve. Eriksson says lessons were learned from both these experiences and the defender believes this team is capable of going the distance.
‘By reaching the final we’ve learnt that we have it in us to go all the way. That brings a big confidence to the group that we know that we can do it. We definitely have the quality in the squad to go all the way. Last year we really had to understand the difficulty of a group stage where it’s six games, it’s a really hectic game schedule.
‘You have to focus on your recovery and do all those things right so I think that’s what we will take with us into this group stage. I’m just really pleased we got off to a really good start and got three points in a tough away game and now we want to keep that momentum going.’
Looking at Vllaznia, a team we have never encountered on the European stage, the skipper gave an insight into what we can expect from our opponents and says it’s our responsibility to get off to a fast start in the game.
‘I know that they have couple of American players and they made it really difficult for Real Madrid in last week’s game. They only scored quite late in the game and it was a 2-0 game, so we have to respect the opponent. They’re going to make it really tough for us. I think they’re going to play compact and defend well. It’s on us to get a good start and set the tempo in the game.’
For the first time in three matches, the Blues return home to Kingsmeadow with back-to-back home games to play this week. Eriksson is looking forward to being back in front of the fans and insists the focus is firmly on securing another victory.
‘In general we’re really confident when we play at Kingsmeadow. We know we have great fans, it’s always a great crowd coming there and we feel really at home there. I know we have great confidence playing there and tomorrow we just want to keep the momentum going. We want to get another three points to get six out of six from two games, so that’s all we’re focusing on tomorrow.’
