Erin Cuthbert’s fourth Women’s Super League goal of the season was a priceless one, and it epitomised the Scot’s desire as she put her head where it hurts to earn Chelsea victory against Manchester City.

Introduced shortly before the hour mark, Cuthbert initially brought added stability to our midfield. She then showcased her happy knack of popping up with a goal, ghosting into the six-yard box to meet Ashley Lawrence’s teasing cross and bravely heading us into a 2-1 lead. With only five minutes of stoppage time remaining, it was an advantage we didn’t relinquish.

‘I’m delighted,’ Erin smiled afterwards.

‘It’s nice when you score a goal in stoppage time, especially to give us that breathing room in the league. We needed that, so I’m happy.

‘I’m delighted also because my dad was in the stands watching. It was a game that was going to be decided by tight margins. I threw myself at it, head, body, shoulder, everything was going in the net!’

The first 45 minutes did not go to plan at the Etihad and Cuthbert acknowledged changes had to be made.

‘We wanted to put a bit of pressure on them from the off but we never managed to do that,’ she said.

‘We made a few tactical tweaks trying to stop the transitions because they were so threatening in the first half. We nullified that in the second half and we became more of a threat ourselves.

‘People think it’s the end of the world when you concede, but we just needed a bit more calmness and control on the ball. Once we got that, we grew into the ascendency.’

The final episode of this intriguing Chelsea vs Manchester City quartet of fixtures awaits on Thursday. City come into the second leg of our Champions League quarter-final 2-0 up, and Cuthbert knows the Blues have it all to do.

‘Man City are a top team so to win against them and do the double home and away in the league is brilliant for us, but it will be a tough ask in the Champions League now to try and overcome a two-goal deficit.

‘We are going to need to have a perfect game, everybody knows that. We are going to have to be better from the first whistle and show our intent in the game. We are going to give it everything, leave it all out there and have no regrets.’
