Erin Cuthbert is in confident mood ahead of Chelsea's Women's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona. The midfielder has chipped in with crucial goals against Manchester City in the league and Liverpool in the FA Cup semi-final recently, and she's keen to add more to her tally.

The Scotland international signed for Chelsea back in 2017, and has since added seven league titles to her list of honours with the Blues, as well four FA Cup and three League Cup trophies.

Yet the one that eludes Cuthbert and Chelsea is the Champions League but she thinks the winning mentality that has been cultivated at the club can be one of this side's biggest weapons as they chase the coveted trophy.

'I think it's about the players the club have brought in,' the midfielder explained. 'Some top, top players from clubs who have experienced it, have lived it, have won it all. Then I think it's a good blend of young players who are learning from the more experienced pros in training every day, where losing is not an option.

'You should be upset if you've lost. You should be angry. I can't remember the amount of times I went home in a terrible mood because I've lost, but it's because it matters and it has to matter every day or else it won't matter as much in the game.'

Chelsea ended Barcelona's five-year unbeaten run at home with a 1-0 win in the first leg of the semi-final last season before the ten-player Blues lost the second tie 2-0.

Cuthbert scored the only goal in that first-leg clash and has great memories of the contest.

'That was brilliant,' she grins. 'I just remember we had a real good game plan that day. We managed to frustrate them, slow the game down, but also be really good on the counter attack.

'I think we caused a lot of problems. I remember Mayra [Ramirez] up top created a few chances as well, and obviously to score myself personally and then celebrate with the small number of Chelsea fans in the top corner that had travelled out there. I could honestly hear them during the match. That was a brilliant game.

'I've never personally been about scoring. There's never been one thing that specifically gave me confidence. But of course, it's nice to know that I can make contributions to the team and it certainly helps me in a busy run of games. And as we come to the business end of the season, it's good to know that I can keep chipping in.

'But that game does just go to show that over the two legs, the game's never over after the first one. We knew that the game wasn't over, of course. We knew that going into the game, but Barca just got the upper hand in the second leg.'

Resilience has been a key characteristic of this Chelsea side. The Blues earned their place in the semi-final by overturning a 2-0 deficit against Manchester City from the first leg, and also grabbed a spot at Wembley for the FA Cup final after having initially been 1-0 down to Liverpool in the semi-final at Kingsmeadow.

That unwavering belief of the team is something Cuthbert believes will stand them in good stead, even if she'd rather not have to make another comeback at all.

'Yeah, I mean, we don't want to be in that position again,' she said. 'Certainly not by any stretch of the imagination, but it gives me confidence in the group that no matter what the the result is, this team will never, ever give up and will never, ever rest or be happy with the result.

'So I think it gives us confidence knowing that there's going to be tough moments ahead, hopefully not 3-0 down, but whatever it is, we can weather it by pulling together.

'I think for us now, it is the business end of the season, just concentrating on every game, not looking too far ahead, not looking towards any cup finals or any last games of the season or anything like that.

'It's literally just every game in front of us, one foot in front of the other and focussing on the process each and every game.

'I know it sounds cliché, but as soon as you start to look too far ahead, then you don't take care of the business in front of you. So it's just got to be game by game.

'Next up is Barcelona, and then it'll be Crystal Palace and we won't be looking towards the second Barca game. So we want to win everything available, but I think the best chance we've got to do in that is taking each game as it comes.'
