Chelsea FC Women midfielder Erin Cuthbert says the team are ‘raring to go’ following Sunday’s last-gasp victory against Aston Villa as we prepare to face Everton in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League this evening.

Cuthbert was forced off through injury against Arsenal in February, but our No.22 is back and ready to kick on for the remainder of the campaign.

The Scotland international was brought on as a 66th-minute substitute on Sunday afternoon against Aston Villa. On her return, Cuthbert said: ‘It felt really good, I enjoyed being back!

‘For me, it’s really difficult to watch the games at home and in the stands because I’m itching to get out there and I feel helpless when I’m not involved.

‘The girls have done really well in this period and I’m just happy to be back and hopefully I can contribute as much as I can on the pitch.’

Sam Kerr scored a 92nd-minute winner on Sunday to keep the title race on, with the Blues just five points behind league leaders Arsenal, having played two games fewer than the Gunners.

‘We’re still alive, we’re still fighting. It’s been a really tough week for the club and there’s been a lot of distractions going on off the pitch, it’s hard to really focus and concentrate but I think when you’re not playing at your best and you still manage to grind out a result... if it comes to the end of the season and we’ve ended up winning the league, we’ve certainly put ourselves in the best position winning games like that on Sunday.

‘Those are the type of games that win you championships and get you to where you want to be.’

Cuthbert’s return to the field was her first time back on the pitch since February.

‘I’ve just been kind of getting back into it and getting to work and that’s the thing with me, I’ve missed out on a couple of games but I’ve been lucky enough that we’ve had another game every few days now and I’m not missing my football too much because it was an international break.’

On facing tonight’s opponents Everton, Cuthbert said: ‘We’re certainly ready, the training yesterday was good to iron out a few things.

‘Everyone’s raring to go and I think that game on Sunday has given the team a lot of energy and I feel like we really need to use that against Everton and use it as momentum to now kick on.

‘I feel like every time we go to Everton it’s always a tough game. They make it really, really difficult for us and they press pretty aggressively and they’re quite physical in a one vs one battle.

‘They’ve got a lot of good, individual talent but maybe they’ve not excelled this year in terms of their position in the table – it’s a little bit false because I think they’re a very, very good team with good individuals and I think it’s only a matter of time before they come together.

‘We need to make sure that we’re on the top of our game and we’re controlling the controllables.’

The title race is as tight as it ever has been in the WSL and our No.22 believes it’s the best way for players to play to the best of their ability.

‘I’ve been at the club where we’ve run away with it before and yes it was nice, but I feel like I’m a player personally who likes to thrive under pressure, I like feeling the pressure. I like to test myself and I feel like you only find that optimal level of your own performance when you’re playing right on the edge and when it’s neck and neck you really have to play on the edge in order to fight for titles.

‘If we want to win the league, we need every player playing on the edge and that’s the most exciting part because it brings out a level in performance individually that maybe I haven’t seen in myself. Hopefully I can just keep up the form I had before my injury, I’m always happy to contribute in any way that I can.'

Cuthbert has been full of praise for the fans, particularly after Sunday’s win, and explains just how important their support is.

‘They’re amazing, I can remember that so vividly. We were passing the ball around the back and they were singing so, so loud and that was when the game was 0-0 and it can be easy for them to be frustrated at us and angry that we haven’t scored or won the game by that point. But they stuck with us and we rewarded them and I think on Sunday when we scored the goal that was the loudest I’d ever heard Kingsmeadow. We’ve had record and sell-out crowds before but I think that noise trumped all of that, to beat everything and be the loudest it’s ever been.

‘We really, really need the fans and whoever we can get at the games please come because it’s so important for us and we’re going to need you in this final stretch of the season.’

Tonight’s game against the Toffees kicks off at 7pm and fans can watch every kick live on the FA Player.
