It is not often that Chelsea Women have suffered disappointment this season but now they have, Erin Cuthbert wants to channel that pain to ensure it doesn’t happen again.

The Blues bowed out of the Champions League to an impressive Barcelona, losing both legs of the semi-final tie 4-1. But the season is far from over. Chelsea could wrap up the Women’s Super League title as early as tomorrow, when we travel to play Manchester United if results go our way. We will also contest the Women’s FA Cup final against them next month.

Responding to adversity, especially when it is uncommon, is a sign of great teams. The experienced Cuthbert knows that better than anyone.

‘We didn’t show our best self over the two legs, but that’s football and you have to look forward,’ the Scot said.

‘We need to use the hurt from the Barcelona game, remember what it feels like, and know we don’t want to feel like that again. We need to use it as motivation and fuel to keep going on.

‘We have to use this and give everything in the last few weeks of the season. We have to make sure it doesn’t become season defining.

‘We have got two trophies still to play for. We have got to keep pushing. For us, what bigger incentive than Manchester United? As a football player, you just want the next game to come, so we will be ready.’

If history is anything to go by, you can expect a positive reaction from Sonia Bompastor's Blues.
