Marc Cucurella played the full 120 minutes to help Spain defeat Germany 2-1 after extra time and advance into the Euro 2024 semi-finals.

Our full-back was named in Spain's starting XI for the clash in Stuttgart by head coach Luis de la Fuente and kept his composure during a game that saw 17 cards dished out by referee Anthony Taylor.

In an open contest, Spain broke the deadlock early into the second half when 16-year-old winger Lamine Yamal slid a pass into the German box and Dani Olmo swept a shot beyond Manuel Neuer.

It was a lead Spain defended against strong pressure from the host nation. Yet in the final moments of the 90 minutes, a cross to the back post was knocked down by Joshua Kimmich and Florian Wirtz was able to guide a shot through bodies and in off the post.

The goal forced extra time, but Germany could not maintain the momentum generated by their late equaliser. Chances were few and far between. Bookings were racked up by both sides, one of which was to Dani Carvajal.

It appeared penalties would settle the contest, but Spain's winner then arrived. Cucurella was involved in the build-up as he shifted the ball out to Olmo, who produced an inch-perfect cross for Mikel Merino.

The Spanish midfielder contorted his body and guided a header beyond Neuer, who was given no chance.

Germany attempted another late fightback – and Spain ended the contest with ten men after Carvajal was shown a second yellow card for a blatant foul on Jamal Musiala. Yet the hosts could not pull themselves level and exited the tournament.

Cucurella and Spain are now just two matches away from being crowned European champions. One of either France or Portugal awaits.
