Group C reached a conclusion on Tuesday evening with four Chelsea players involved in matchday squads, as Cole Palmer made his first tournament appearance for England's senior team.

The Three Lions were already assured of a place in the knockout round due to Monday's results and ensured they won the group tonight despite being held to a 0-0 draw by Slovenia in Cologne.

Conor Gallagher made his first start at a senior major tournament after coming into the XI in place of Trent Alexander-Arnold. The 24-year-old worked tirelessly before being substituted for Kobbie Mainoo at half-time.

Palmer was arguably England's greatest attacking threat after coming on in the 71st minute. Playing off England's right, the 22-year-old created one good opening with an incisive pass before going close to a dramatic winner in the dying minutes, only to be denied by a smart save from Jan Oblak.

The result means England will play their round of 16 fixture on Sunday [kick-off time, 5pm UK time] against one of the best third place qualifiers.

Elsewhere in Group C, Serbia played out a 0-0 stalemate with Denmark, with Djordje Petrovic an unused substitute.

The Chelsea goalkeeper could only watch on as his side were held, with Denmark’s Jonas Wind going closest to breaking the deadlock only for his goal to be ruled out.

It means the end of the road for Petrovic and Serbia, who finished fourth in the pool and are eliminated from the tournament.

Earlier in the day, Chelsea defender Ian Maatsen was back on duty for the Netherlands for their final Group D game against Austria in Berlin, again named as a substitute.

The Dutch were already guaranteed a place in the last 16 after taking four points from their first two games. But they endured a difficult evening, falling behind to an early Donyell Malen own goal.

Cody Gakpo did equalise with a cool finish after good work from Xavi Simons just after the break. However, they were only level for 12 minutes with Romano Schmid restoring the Austrian lead with a diving header.

Memphis Depay thought he had earned the Dutch a draw when his fine volley survived a VAR check for handball but Marcel Sabitzer's strike secured a stunning Austrian victory – as Maatsen remained on the bench.

The result means Austria win the group, while Netherlands will still progress to the knockout stage as one of the best third place sides, with the potential of facing Gallagher and Palmer's England on the cards depending on Wednesday night's results.
