Eight footballers from the Chelsea Foundation’s disability programme showcased pride, passion and skills in the Special European Cup held in St Gallen, Switzerland.
Coach Jordan Clarke said he was ‘honoured’ to be part of the five-day tournament, which saw Foundation players with cerebral palsy, autism and speech and language impairments take on representatives from clubs in France, Portugal and Germany in a mix of friendly and competitive matches and activities.
He said: ‘The players were excellent from start to finish, showing a high level of professionalism. It’s been a truly unforgettable experience.’
Each member of the squad had the opportunity to play alongside and be coached by someone of a different nationality and language during the games hosted by Football is More, helping them work as a team, learn key life skills and grow in confidence.
Arriving back in the UK, one player reflected on the experience: ‘I want to say a massive thank you to everyone for making the trip so amazing. It’s trips like these that make me so proud to be part of the Foundation.
‘Thank you to the coaches for the work put in throughout the week and for creating the environment to enable us as players to represent the club on and off the pitch in such a strong and positive manner.’
One parent added: ‘There aren’t enough words to adequately thank you; an amazing experience for my son with a truly outstanding team of people.’
Disability officer Ellie Crabb paid tribute to the players and staff who attended and said the trip was ‘so rewarding’ for everyone involved: ‘The players and staff are a huge credit to themselves, their families, and the club.
'They showed huge acts of kindness in handing gifts to opposition players and local children who were in awe of them as people and footballers representing the club. These experiences are truly incredible for them, and for us as staff who work with them on a regular basis.’
