Filipe Coelho has praised his Chelsea Under-21s side for a determined team effort to secure victory over Manchester United, and the well-earned win has built confidence and momentum for Friday’s upcoming test against Manchester City.
The Blues made it back-to-back wins and clean sheets in Premier League 2, with the previous week's 3-0 victory at Liverpool added to by a 2-0 triumph over Manchester United 2-0 at Kingsmeadow last Friday.
Coelho's side took control early in that game and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen opened the scoring with a well-taken goal; the young winger latched onto a long ball from Samuel Rak-Sakyi before firing into the bottom corner from outside the box.
Ato Ampah doubled our lead just before the interval with a powerful strike from Ronnie Stutter's inspired assist, and it was an advantage we did not surrender as we managed the second-half pressure from the visitors well. It's a result that ensures we go into this Friday's league game away at Manchester City in good form.
'The most important results come from both what you thought you knew and what you learned,' Coelho reflected on last Friday's win. 'Above all, we achieved this together. Our energy against Manchester United was clear for all to see.
'We had been working together for a long time and finally we began to see that work pay off. The way we communicated with and supported one another was excellent, both offensively and defensively. This sense of unity is something we take great pride in, and it has been a crucial factor in our success.
'We’ve demonstrated this in previous matches, including our win at Liverpool. Last Friday, we displayed the same level of commitment and performance. Whether it was our blocks, clearances, or saves from the goalkeeper, everyone contributed to securing the win.
'Offensively we created chances and our solid defensive play allowed us to secure all three points. Now, we’re turning our focus to next week and looking ahead with excitement, as it’s shaping up to be a fantastic month for us.'
In recent weeks, several younger players from our Academy have stepped up to the Under-21s squad. Against Manchester United, two schoolboys were involved in the squad, including Kavuma-McQueen who marked his first start with his first goal at this level.
In addition, four regular members of our Under-18s also made their way onto the pitch at Kingsmeadow.
That involvement hasn’t been limited to just one match, however. Since the start of the campaign, the younger players have consistently made significant contributions. Shumaira Mheuka got his first goal in a 6-0 victory over Fulham, Frankie Runham netted the winner against Bournemouth in December and Genesis Antwi scored the equaliser in our 1-1 draw with Leeds United.
'Regarding the younger players, their mobility and movement cause many problems for the opposition,' Coelho said. 'That age group naturally faces challenges, but they have learned to communicate and solve problems independently, which is a huge achievement.
'Against United, I was particularly pleased with how we managed the movement. As we approached the final phase of the match, the players made crucial decisions, not just in defending but also in controlling the game.
'It’s not just about the coaching staff making all the decisions. We want the players to take ownership of their choices, understand the reasoning behind them and recognise the consequences. When they do, they feel more connected, communicate better and grow both as individuals and as a team.
'I’ve been really pleased with how the younger players have stepped up, not just on Friday, but since the start of the season,' Coelho said. 'They understand that success comes from working and fighting for each other and we’ve shown that commitment consistently.'
Chelsea are now unbeaten in five games across all competitions, and our focus now shifts to the next challenge: a trip to Premier League 2 leaders Manchester City.
Having won 13 of their 16 league matches, City will provide a stern test. However, with a growing confidence coupled with a rise to fourth place, just one point behind West Ham United, the Blues are fully prepared for the test on Friday evening.
'Now, it’s about how we approach our work,' added Filipe. 'We aim to improve every day, whether it’s through continued individual development or growing stronger as a squad. We always strive to be the best versions of ourselves.
'Our next challenge is against Manchester City and we’re determined to keep building on our progress. They’re a strong team and they’ll bring tough challenges, but we’re ready to face them head-on.
'Of course, we aim to win every league game, but our primary focus is on development and progression. Our goal is to prepare all our players for the next stage of their careers in men’s football.
'Individual development is essential, but we also place great emphasis on team-work. As we demonstrated against Manchester United, the desire to win is crucial. In a top academy like this, individual progress and team success go hand in hand.'
