Djordje Petrovic sits at Cobham and looks around his new surroundings. A smile etches across his face as he prepares for his first interview as a Chelsea player.
It’s clear. This is his home now, and already he feels happy here.
The Serbian completed his move to Chelsea from MLS side New England Revolution on Saturday, penning a long-term deal and joins a strong goalkeeping rank that includes Robert Sanchez and Marcus Bettinelli among others.
Petrovic, who was coached by former Chelsea stopper Kevin Hitchcock in New England, was at Stamford Bridge to watch us defeat Luton Town on Friday evening but it is at Cobham where we pick up the story of his move to the Blues and the source of that beaming smile when he settles down to speak to us about his transfer.
‘It’s so nice here!’ Petrovic says warmly of our training ground while waiting for the interview to start. ‘Everything here is set up to win, to learn and to achieve great things at the very top level.
‘I’m so happy to be at Chelsea and I’m really excited to get started at this club. It’s a big step for me and it’s always been a dream of mine to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the world and today I have achieved that goal. I’m so happy!
‘Playing in the Premier League is something I’m really looking forward to doing and I hope to learn many things here at Chelsea. I can’t wait to meet everyone and play at Stamford Bridge.’
Petrovic was spotted in the Stamford Bridge crowd on Friday evening, where a brace from Raheem Sterling and a further strike from Nicolas Jackson secured our first three points of the season.
After having his appetite whetted by what he saw, the goalkeeper is already itching to get to work with his new team-mates and revealed how he hopes to follow in the path of his fellow countryman Branislav Ivanovic and Nemanja Matic in tasting success in Chelsea blue.
‘I was at the game on Friday night against Luton and it was fantastic to experience the atmosphere inside Stamford Bridge,’ the new recruit added.
‘It was a good win for the team, our first of the season, and I just can’t wait to help the guys out now and experience it for myself at such a beautiful stadium.
‘I grew up watching a lot of Premier League football so it really is a dream for me to be here now. I love the intensity of the league and the passion shown by the supporters.
‘I know a lot about Chelsea. I remember watching Drogba but, as a Serbian, I liked to watch players like Ivanovic and Nemanja Matic.
‘I’m the next Serbian to play here and I want to achieve many good things at Chelsea like they did!'
Petrovic saves his final words for Mauricio Pochettino, his new head coach, who he reveals he met with ahead of the clash with Luton and hopes to achieve great things under the stewardship of the Argentine and his staff.
‘I met with the coaching staff at the hotel before the game against Luton and it was very nice to speak with them,’ Djordje added.
‘They told me everything that I wanted to hear, they welcomed me into the club and they told me that I will have the opportunity to grow and achieve great things with them here. That was exactly what I wanted to hear and it seems a great place to be.’
