There were hugs aplenty at Cobham today as Ben Chilwell celebrated his birthday and a Christmas feast was laid on for the players after training.

Chilly turns 27 today and he continued his individual work out on the grass on a windy morning in Surrey. Mauricio Pochettino was quick to embrace him (above) and so too did Mykhailo Mudryk before the players headed out.

Training today was split between the grass and the gym, with the focus on recovery for those players who started against Newcastle on Tuesday.

There were several notable contributions from those who came off the bench in that game, not least our last-gasp goalscorer Mudryk. He is pictured going for goal again here.

Christopher Nkunku was the most noteworthy introduction on Tuesday as he made his belated Chelsea debut for the final 25 minutes, also brilliantly scoring his penalty in the subsequent shoot-out.

Pochettino has warned against expecting too much too soon from the Frenchman, however.

'Anyone can judge [a player] straight away, but the most important is in which form,' he said.

'The expectation is to see the best Nkunku, but the problem is we need time for him to perform in the way we expect.

'It is one thing is to be available; another is to perform in the way we expect. That is why we are not going to put too much pressure on him. Day by day we will push him to arrive at his best as soon as possible.'

Fellow attacker Armando Broja believes Tuesday's dramatic success can kickstart the Blues' campaign.

‘Games like these show our spirit in the team and we stuck together and dug deep and got the result at the end of the game, which is the most important thing,' the Albanian stressed.

‘We have been playing some really good football. So hopefully we can keep going forward and this result will bring us more positive results.’

Pochettino hopes to be boosted by the return of Romeo Lavia soon. The midfielder continues to work hard in his recovery from injury, and he was pictured out on the grass today too.

After training it was time for the traditional Christmas lunch at Cobham and a further opportunity for the players to spend time together away from football. Now the focus turns to picking up an early Christmas present in the form of three points at Wolves.
