After committing her future to the club for two more years, the next goal Sam Kerr scores will be her 100th for Chelsea. So out of the 99 so far, what goals stand out most for the Blues striker?
From European nights, last-minute winners, FA Cup finals and title-deciding finishes – Kerr has done it all. The Australian’s goals have helped Chelsea to 11 trophies since she signed in 2019.
We sat down with Kerr at Stamford Bridge to do the somewhat impossible task of picking out five of her favourite goals in Blue so far…
Chelsea 3-0 Arsenal – FA Cup final, December 5, 2021
In her maiden FA Cup final for Chelsea, Kerr enjoyed a day to remember on our way to the trophy. It was a sign of what was to come at the national stadium as a Kerr brace helped the Blues to a 3-0 win over Arsenal.
Her second goal, which was the Blues' third, was a moment which left those watching in awe. And Kerr admits the lofted effort over goalkeeper Manuela Zinsberger even left herself impressed.
‘I found myself out wide and I don’t know what I was doing out there,’ said Kerr of the build-up to the goal. ‘I just saw Mellie (Leupolz) intercept the ball and I was off.
‘I knew I was levelling outside Catley. I knew if I took a big touch I’d be through on goal. I had so long to think about it, but I just remember hitting it and seeing it float over her head and thinking it was going to drop in.
‘You honestly dream about those goals. It was the first time after Covid that we’d played in front of such a big crowd. I would have done a backflip, but I was so tired!’
Chelsea 4-2 Manchester United – WSL, May 8, 2022
On the final day of the 2021/22 season, Chelsea needed to beat Manchester United to win a historic third consecutive Women’s Super League title and the Blues had to come from behind at Kingsmeadow to do so.
Manchester United led 2-1 at half-time, before two stunning Kerr volleys and a strike from Guro Reiten sealed the win and the league trophy.
In the 66th minute, Kerr netted Chelsea’s fourth and her second of the day, and it was certainly the pick of the bunch in the six-goal thriller. A volley over the top of Manchester United goalkeeper Mary Earps was a finish fitting of the occasion.
‘It’s interesting because when you watch it back you can clearly see that I take a look, but I had no idea what was going through my head to try that,’ said Kerr, still in slight disbelief two years on.
‘It was funny because the reason why I run over to the bench to celebrate with Denise (Reddy) was because the day before I told her I was going to get the ball from our goalkeeper kicking it long and I was going to hit it from distance.
‘It obviously wasn’t that, but I just talked myself into doing it! I wouldn’t normally try that. Guro got it from Mary (Earps) and once I got that ball off my chest, there was no other option.
‘It’s one of those that if you miss it, you look like a bit of an idiot. But, watching it back with the commentary, it was even better for me. I love watching goals like that so to score one was unbelievable.’
Chelsea 3-0 PSG – UWCL, December 22, 2022
A cold winter’s night at Stamford Bridge saw Kerr score one of her most memorable goals. She opened the scoring in the group stage clash just before half-time with a strike from distance. Not an unfamiliar-looking finish for Kerr, but it lives long in her memory simply because she hit it with her weaker foot.
‘I don’t score too many lefties!’ she said. ‘For me, I don’t know what I was thinking shooting that far out on my left foot, but the space just opened up and I could see that they were dropping off because I was on my left.
‘I thought I’d just have a crack and it sailed into the top corner. Once it came off my foot, I thought that’s going in because you know when you just hit it well. Coming off my left, it doesn’t normally go like that! I knew straight away. I really enjoyed that one.’
Chelsea 1-0 Aston Villa – WSL, March 13, 2022
This is a goal that stands out to Kerr, not for the finish but for what it meant. A 92nd-minute winner at Kingsmeadow boosted our title hopes as we sat two points behind leaders Arsenal, with a game in hand. We would go on to win the title on the final day.
Kerr thought she had opened the scoring ten minutes prior to netting the winner, but it was ruled out for offside. When the ball crossed the line in injury time – after Kerr latched on to a long ball from goalkeeper Zecira Musovic, there was a huge sense of relief for our striker.
‘It was last minute and Millie (Bright) was up as the double-nine and we just had to go for it,’ explained Kerr. ‘Once the ball came down, I was like just touch it in the goal and don’t try to do anything special.
‘I think it was Hannah (Hampton) in the goal which is funny to think now. It was just the moment and everything that was riding on it. That goal is one of my best memories ever.’
Chelsea 4-1 Paris FC – UWCL, November 23, 2023
Stamford Bridge was the venue for our first home match of our latest Champions League campaign and Kerr was the star of the show against Paris FC, netting her first European hat-trick.
Our striker opened the scoring on the half-hour mark, before adding two more in the 48th and 55th minute. And it was the final goal of the three that Kerr highlighted as one of her favourites.
‘On this one, I definitely seen the keeper coming out of her box and thought she could come and get it,’ she said. ‘It kind of felt like it was going to get away from me because it was a bit dewy that night. When I saw the goalkeeper, I knew I had to put it high and over her.
‘That was a nice one. It was my first hat-trick in the Champions League, so it was really nice.’
