Jessie Fleming became the latest Chelsea player to join the exclusive 100 Club after making her 100th appearance for the Blues in our 1-1 draw with Manchester City on Sunday.
The 25-year-old was in from the start at the Joie Academy Stadium and marked her landmark outing for the Blues with 60 minutes of football in the 1-1 draw, which was claimed thanks to a 96th-minute goal from Guro Reiten.
Our Canadian midfielder arrived ahead of the 2020/21 campaign and has begun her fourth season with the club. Fleming signed a new contract at the end of last year, reaping the rewards having contributed significantly to the success we have enjoyed in recent seasons.
After being informed last week about the imminent landmark, Fleming reflected fondly on what the team have achieved during her time as a Blue. She expressed the affection she has for the club and is looking forward to adding to her impressive appearance tally.
‘I didn’t realise I was on 100 appearances,' she says. 'My time at the club has gone by so quickly. I’m always excited and proud to be a part of Chelsea and this player group.
'Looking at what the team has accomplished in those 100 appearances, I feel really proud of the work that I’ve put in here. It’s an exciting milestone and hopefully there will be plenty more.’
During her time at the club, Fleming has enjoyed plenty of success and has helped us secure numerous pieces of silverware. She recalls one of the standout moments of her Chelsea career to date which didn’t end in victory, but marked another step in the right direction in Europe.
‘One that stands out for me would probably be the second leg of the Champions League playing away at Barcelona,' she explains. 'We were so close to progressing and getting past such a difficult opponent. It really felt like a step for our team, although the result was disappointing.
‘I grew up watching Xavi and Andres Iniesta on that pitch, so to have the opportunity to play for a club like Chelsea, alongside teammates I really admire, and in front of that many fans was an incredible moment for me. Honestly, it was pure joy.’
When she joined Chelsea, Fleming expressed her excitement about the environment and what it has to offer. And she attributes her development as a player to the competitive nature of training and the demands of the game in England.
‘The training here is so competitive,' she says. 'I’m challenged every day by my teammates and the staff, and that’s what I love about coming here every day. I’ve gotten stronger on the ball, the English league is physical and Chelsea is quite a physical, fast-paced team.
‘I’ve had to learn to play quicker and be a bit stronger on the ball. Those are the two things that have changed in my game. I love this environment because it’s so challenging.’
After signing a new contract last year, the Canadian said had found a ‘home away from home’. Now, she wants to improve her game on an individual level while achieving further success as a collective.
‘Individually, my aspiration is always to develop and to continue to enjoy my football,' the midfielder says. 'For the club, it’s pretty straightforward. We’re going after that fifth WSL title in a row and I also know we all have our sights set on the Champions League and that’s something we want badly at this club.
‘I know Emma, the staff and all the players will do everything we can to achieve that this season.’
