Sarina Wiegman has named her 23-player squad for the upcoming Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, with four Chelsea players called-up by England this summer.
Millie Bright, Jess Carter, Niamh Charles and Lauren James will be representing their country at the showpiece event, which gets underway on July 20, and the Lionesses will enter the tournament as reigning European champions.
Wiegman announced the England players she will be taking to the World Cup at a press conference this afternoon, and Chelsea will be heavily represented as the Lionesses aim to build on their Euros win with further success on the world stage.
Bright and Carter were part of the European Championship-winning squad last summer alongside Fran Kirby, who unfortunately will be missing the tournament as she continues to recover from injury.
Charles and James earn deserved call-ups having performed impressively for the Blues over the course of the season, with the former surpassing 100 appearances for the club in the final weeks of the domestic campaign.
England’s latest preparations included a penalty shootout victory over Brazil in the first Women’s Finalissima at Wembley in April. This was followed up with a 2-0 defeat to joint-hosts Australia four days later, where Sam Kerr was on target for the Matildas in a friendly at Brentford.
The draw for the finals this summer placed England in Group D alongside China PR, Denmark and Haiti. Wiegman’s side begin their group stage campaign against Haiti on July 22 at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane, with kick-off scheduled for 10.30am (UK time)
