Matchday skipper Conor Gallagher was delighted to see the Blues secure our place in the final four of the Carabao Cup with an important victory over Newcastle on penalties.

Despite conceding early on through the Magpies' Callum Wilson, Chelsea remained patient and eventually took the opportunity when it arrived in stoppage time as Mykhailo Mudryk equalised.

It meant the quarter-final tie would be played out on penalties with Djordje Petrovic becoming the hero with a huge save to win the shoot-out for the Blues. Speaking after the match, Gallagher was pleased to give the loyal Stamford Bridge support a moment to enjoy, praising his side’s patience during the match.

He said: ‘I’m buzzing. That was a really good performance. We were battling hard to find a goal and thankfully it came right at the end through Misha’s goal and then we were confident we were going to win the penalty shoot-out.

‘I felt we deserved to win the game and obviously everyone is happy. We just had to keep going which we did.

‘We had a lot of the ball, a lot of possession and we just had to keep creating the chances which we did and eventually we got one in. It was really good for us to stay focused and keep going. It was frustrating at times but we got what we deserved in the end.

‘I loved the scenes at full-time. There haven’t been enough of those moments this season and last season, so hopefully there will be many more.’

Heading into the shootout, Gallagher admits that he felt positive after scoring such a late goal with the momentum clearly with the Blues.

‘I think we felt confident,’ he continued.

‘We were playing well in the game and everyone was confident on the ball. We fought right until the end to get the goal and everyone was confident taking their penalties coming from that performance.’

The midfielder also acknowledged how important the victory will be for the squad's morale, adding: ‘This will be great for the confidence. It’s definitely the best feeling we’ve had this season so everyone is really happy and excited to go into the next round. Of course, we are going to do everything we can to go through to the final now.’
