Paul Green believes Chelsea Women can reach another level after the Blues crushed Manchester United’s 100 per cent record with a statement 3-1 victory at Leigh Sports Village in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.

Two goals in three second-half minutes from Sam Kerr and Lauren James put us in the driving seat, before Alessia Russo reduced the deficit with 20 minutes remaining. Erin Cuthbert sealed the victory with our third goal in stoppage time, ensuring the three points would return to London.

The hosts came into the game with a 100 per cent record in the league, amounting to five wins from as many games without conceding a goal. Three goals away from home against such resolute opposition is a sign of intent ahead of the international break which is now upon us.

On reflection, there were several aspects of our game which pleased the coaching staff. Green was impressed with our ability to remain patient in the face of stern opposition, while commending the clinical edge we displayed in front of goal.

‘We did have to be patient, but I thought we were worthy winners over the 90 minutes. In the second half in particular, for the first 15-20 minutes of that when we got the two goals, we played some really good football.

‘We looked dangerous every time we went forward. We deserved it, we knew we’d have to be patient coming here. They’ve not conceded a goal before but we knew we had the weapons in our squad that could hurt them. Coming here and scoring three tells that story.’

It was déjà vu as James, who picked up the player of the match award, shone brightest with another impressive individual display which included a well-taken goal to add to her tally. Green was delighted with James’ performance and revealed her determination to make an impact against her old club.

‘Lauren arrived in the box just at the right time and perfectly finished it in the bottom corner. She was outstanding all night to be honest. She was a real bright spark for us every time she got the ball and looked like she was going to make something happen for us. She was very deserving of her goal and she was a constant threat to United all night.

‘She was looking forward to coming back here and showing what she can do. She was delighted to get the goal and her overall performance, she’s been improving every week and long may that continue. We’ve got a hell of a player on our hands and we just need to keep developing her in the right way. She was deserving of player of the match.’

It was a potent attacking display on the night, but there was equally valiant defending to be done at the other end. Green praised our resolute backline and hopes we can continue our form when we reconvene after the international break.

‘We’ve got a lot of momentum behind us in this period. We are getting back to our best. It was a good defensive performance. We gave up a goal through an individual misplaced pass but in general, our defending was really good and we were solid. Coming away from home to one of our nearest rivals, I didn’t think Ann-Katrin (Berger) was tested that much.

‘We defended well and limited them to the number of chances they had. We are getting back to that level and now we go into the international break in a good place and look to welcome Emma back, hopefully if her recovery goes as planned, for the next game against Tottenham at the Bridge in November.’

The Blues have been moving through the gears under Denise Reddy and Green, finding different ways to win against difficult opponents. Green is excited to see how far the group can go.

‘There is definitely more to come throughout the season. We are getting better and stronger with each performance. We look forward to seeing where this team can go. It’s the best squad we’ve ever had. We feel really confident with the business we did in the summer and where the squad is at.

‘We’ve got to try and take this momentum into the upcoming games once they’re back from the international break and see where it can take us.’
