Pernille Harder left France happy after Chelsea Women recorded what could be a crucial victory away at Paris Saint-Germain in our opening fixture of the Women’s Champions League group stage.

The Blues are in a tough Group A – alongside PSG, Real Madrid and Vllaznia – but got off to an excellent start in Paris as Millie Bright volleyed us in front just before the hour-mark and we put in a confident performance to hold on to that narrow lead and secure a 1-0 victory in a hostile atmosphere at the Stade Jean Bouin.

Believing this will be one of, if not the toughest challenge of this season’s group stage, Harder felt it could be a crucial victory for our chances of reaching the knockout stages and underlined the importance of us getting that first goal away at Paris Saint-Germain.

‘It’s so important to get that goal and it was a great goal by Millie so I was really pleased by that,’ said Harder.

‘The message at half-time was just to keep on our game plan. Stay compact, work hard in defence and then take the transitions we would get.

‘I think it was a really professional performance. We know it’s really difficult to play here in Paris, it will probably be the most important game in the group, together with Real Madrid away.

‘Paris are a great team so we’re really happy with the three points.’

She also dismissed any concerns the Chelsea players might have found the atmosphere created by the French fans intimidating, instead relegating the constant noise they produced to more of a minor inconvenience.

‘I don’t think that much about it, the only problem is that we can’t hear each other. But it’s good, we know each other quite well so we don’t have to talk that much on the pitch. That’s the most annoying part, that we can’t talk really.’

There was plenty for Harder to smile about on a personal level too. Having not featured for Chelsea since May due to injury, the Danish international scored twice on her return to action in the weekend’s 3-1 win at Everton in the Women’s Super League.

Having continued her comeback with another impressive performance in Paris, during which she linked up well with Sam Kerr throughout, Harder seemed relieved to be back helping her team-mates.

‘I’m really happy to be back and be healthy with my hamstrings. So I’m just glad to be on the pitch and playing some football, doing what I love, and with this team as well.’

Harder will be hoping to continue her and Chelsea’s promising form in a busy week to come, when we travel to Brighton in the WSL on Sunday before continuing our Champions League campaign at home against Vllaznia next Wednesday evening.
