The Blues host our London rivals West Ham on Sunday 11 September and a bumper crowd is expected to witness the attempt to get our title defence under way with a win. We caught up with Pernille Harder and Lauren James following Sunday’s win against Tottenham Hotspur…
Harder, who was on the scoresheet in Sunday’s 2-0 pre-season friendly victory over Spurs, says the thrill of playing at the club’s biggest stadium further adds to the normal excitement a new campaign brings.
'It’s great to get a win in the last friendly before the season starts,' Harder said. 'It was a good first half. We came out really well and played some good football and we got two good goals.
'I am looking forward to the new season so much, first of all for the season and then to play at Stamford Bridge will be unbelievable. It will be my first time.'
Fans could see up to six players make their Blues debuts. Eve Perisset and Johanna Rytting Kaneryd both impressed against Spurs at Kingsmeadow, while Jelena Cankovic, Kadeisha Buchanan, Katerina Svitkova and Lucy Watson have also joined.
'The new signings have come in really well,' Harder added. 'It feels like they have been here longer than just one month. It’s amazing. They are super nice girls outside the pitch and really great football players on the pitch.'
Before the big kick-off, many Blues stars will be on international duty. Lauren James, who grabbed the second goal on Sunday will be part of the England set-up for the World Cup qualifiers against Austria and Luxembourg when the squad meet for the first time since the unforgettable success at Euro 2022.
James celebrated her England call-up with a fine low strike against Spurs - and was quick to thank her club head coach Emma Hayes for an unlikely assist.
'Emma’s been telling me to arrive in the box and follow up in the final zone,' James explained. 'I’ve been trying to do it and it showed that it worked. I just thought I’ll have a go and it went in.
'I’m really looking forward to the new season. Hopefully everyone comes back from the international break healthy and we’re ready to go at Stamford Bridge.'
We begin our WSL title defence against West Ham at Stamford Bridge on Sunday 11 September when we will also be celebrating Chelsea Women’s 30-year anniversary and 10 years under Emma Hayes. Tickets start from £2 for juniors and £9 for adults and are available to be purchased on our website here.
