Christopher Nkunku was delighted to earn his first Chelsea hat-trick after a stellar performance during our 5-0 victory over Barrow in the Carabao Cup.

The Frenchman hit a quickfire double to knock the wind out of the League Two side's sails, with Nkunku linking up with his team-mates Joao Felix and Malo Gusto for both strikes.

After assisting the hat-trick hero with an impressive flick, Joao Felix played a huge part in the third as his free-kick deflected in off Barrow’s goalkeeper to give the Blues a resounding lead.

After the break, Pedro Neto made it four after a slick passing move between Christo and Mykhailo Mudryk, before Nkunku rounded off an impressive display by tapping into an empty net after picking up a loose ball inside the box.

Pleased with his efforts, last night's Player of the Match believes this is only the start and is focused on continuing his hard work to earn more opportunities.

‘I’m happy but the most important thing is the win,’ he opened. ‘We wanted to take the game seriously and we did that so we are all happy now.

‘This is just the beginning of the season and we have only worked for just over two months, and now we are part of the process, but this is just the beginning. We need to work hard in every training session and every game.’

With Nicolas Jackson having scored twice against West Ham last weekend and Nkunku’s efforts last night, there is lots of competition for places in the Blues’ starting XI, something which the French forward is enjoying.

‘I think for each player and each position, you need to be competitive,’ Nkunku said.

‘You need to work hard and show what you can do. We want to help the team in every game. We just want to play and have a great game every game.

‘I’m feeling better. Last season was a disappointing season for me, but now it’s behind me. I just want to keep going and to work hard to get to my best level.’

As well as notching three goals, our No. 18 explained how much he enjoys playing a role in the build-up and creating chances for his fellow team-mates.

‘I think this is my personality, even outside the pitch,’ he added. ‘I just want people around me to be happy. I tried today, this is how I feel after the game and maybe I could’ve shot, but the best solution was to pass.’
