Kai Havertz is pleased with his excellent recent form for Chelsea, but feels it wouldn’t have been possible without learning from the difficult moments he has come through at the club and identified consistency as the next step in his progress.
The German is enjoying arguably his best run of form since joining the Blues, with his tally of 11 goals in all competitions making him our joint-highest scorer this season - alongside Romelu Lukaku - going into tonight’s Champions League last 16 second leg at Lille.
Having scored the late extra-time winner in the Club World Cup final from the penalty spot, it was Havertz’s goal to open the scoring in the 2-0 win in the first leg against Lille at Stamford Bridge which propelled him into his excellent scoring run. He has found the back of the net five times in as many games since.
However, the forward says he is not certain if this is the best form of his Chelsea career, with his focus purely on sustaining his level of performance to achieve these heights on a more consistent basis.
‘It’s hard to say. I think I’m on a good run right now, but I think I’ve played some good matches in the past,’ said Havertz.
‘I’m happy about my performance in the last few matches, but as a footballer you’re always hungry and you want more. So I hope I can play with a lot more consistency like the last week, for example, and I hope I can keep going like this.’
It is fair to say there have been some ups and downs for Havertz, as he acknowledges by underlining the need for consistency in his game, with his first season in England being badly hit by injury and Covid, and more difficulties as the team’s form faltered for similar reasons at the end of 2021.
The 22-year-old believes he has grown as a player during that time, though, especially since fellow German Thomas Tuchel’s arrival as head coach in January last year.
But more than anything, Havertz feels it is those tough moments and the way he has learned from them that are mostly responsible for him becoming a better player and finding periods of form like the one he is currently enjoying, knowing that in football no one experiences the highs without also having to deal with some lows during their career.
‘Obviously the arrival of Thomas Tuchel was good for us. We won some titles. Me personally, I think I’ve grown as well, as a player.
‘I think everyone knows that you cannot only have positive moments, there are also negative moments and I also had this in the last months and the last two years as well. But I think personally sometimes I grow from these situations when you don’t have a good moment and you maybe sit on the bench.
‘I’m young, I can learn a lot, I can improve myself a lot, and a career doesn’t always go up and up and up. You sometimes have to fall down a little bit and sit on the bench and learn from it and sometimes people don’t really see that it helps me and it helps young players as well.
‘I’m very happy here and this moment is a good moment for me right now. I just hope that I can continue like this, like the last games, and I will do my best to continue like that.’
