The final whistle has blown on the Game4Ukraine match played at Stamford Bridge but the way to donate remains open and two of the star names involved are delighted with the progress already made.
A big crowd was treated to big names from the world of football and beyond playing out a 2-2 draw, as Andriy Shevchenko’s Team Blue took on Oleksandr Zinchenko’s Team Yellow with funds raised from the event, which also featured plenty of live music, going to rebuild a school reduced to rubble during the ongoing war in Ukraine.
There were plenty from Chelsea’s past involved and in the case of Mykhailo Mudryk, who made an appearance during the game, and Emma Hayes, who managed Team Blue, our present was played a part too.
After the game, Hayes shared her thoughts about the occasion:
‘I said to the players before the game, we don't remember days but we remember moments and today was a special moment because children deserve a childhood.
‘They deserve the opportunity to play, to learn, to be with one another, and raising money to rebuild the school is a fabulous moment for all of us,’ added the Chelsea Women manager. ‘It has been superb, so many brilliant people - players, actors, musicians - coming together united for Ukraine, so an amazing day.’
Shevchenko, the legend of Ukraine football who for a time called Stamford Bridge his home, was pleased with the outcome and that work on the school receives a big boost.
‘It's been incredible day, thank you so much,’ he said.
‘I want to thank all the great names, the legends, who came to support. Today we supported the Ukraine children, today we raised money to rebuild a school. The school building was destroyed by Russian missiles. This is a great occasion for us to raise money and we're going to start rebuilding.’
You can still do your part and make a donation to the Game4Ukraine fund and help rebuild a school in Chernihiv Oblast.
