Today’s Women’s FA Cup final at Wembley brings the top-two teams in the WSL title race together in the quest for another piece of silverware.
Emma Hayes knows the Women’s FA Cup final well and ahead of kick-off, she has been discussing the impact of past experiences. For one of her players however, there is the potential to play in the final for the first time.
Lauren James signed for Chelsea from today’s opponents Manchester United in 2021 but was an unused sub in the last final. Hayes indicates she could see more action at Wembley this time.
‘Lauren’s motivation is really driven by her love for Chelsea,’ our manager said.
‘She’s Chelsea through and through and she would want nothing more than to contribute towards the team winning the trophy.
‘She's such a great kid. She's had what I'd expect every 21-year-old to go through over the course of the season. You have up and down moments. She's had a really, really good week. I think Lauren is in a good place to be able to contribute to the performance today.’
On Chelsea’s pedigree in this competition, as the winner on the last two occasions and having lifted the trophy four times overall, Hayes had a clear warning.
‘Previous success is not indicative of future success,’ she said. ‘We're playing an outstanding team who have led the way in the league this year and are deserving to be in the cup final.
‘Last year we won the final but I thought Man City played better than us that day. So being there in the past maybe gives you the luxury of understanding what it's like, but it is no advantage whatsoever.
‘We’ve worked really hard to get to the final,’ she adds. ‘We've had a really tough qualification to get to the final, so this is where we want to be.’
The game kicks off at 2.30pm and can be viewed live on BBC One.
