Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes could find no fault with her team in the 6-0 thrashing of Aston Villa in the Women's Super League, praising a scintillating attacking display worthy of the defending champions.
Emma Hayes oversaw a dominant showing from Chelsea Women away at Aston Villa in Saturday's early kick-off in the Women's Super League, with six different players getting their name on the scoresheet during a breathtaking 6-0 victory which sent us top of the table.
It was announced after the match that Hayes will be leaving her post with the Blues at the end of this season, but judging from today's performance there could be plenty more success to enjoy before then.
Unsurprisingly, given her side registered 21 shots over the 90 minutes - the highest in the competition so far this season - she was full of praise for the attacking play on offer in the West Midlands.
'We were mustard! Today I thought we were simply superb,' beamed Hayes. 'I’m really excited, we’ve got some really talented players, and talented young players coming through, and I think you could see it in full view here.
'I enjoyed it from start to finish. I felt like we were a team in control, we looked like champions.
'But we’re evolving, that’s the thing I enjoy about this side. It’s not all done in the past, we have to keep finding new ways and I can see players who keep improving and finding new levels. That’s what gives me pleasure.
'We were very good, the only negative today was the rain!'
Hayes believes that this may be the best attacking team she has managed at Chelsea...
'The first of the three things I wanted to see an improvement on was the conversion for the high-XG chances we create. In the duels, I wanted us to return to the Chelsea standard, and the other one was counter-presses. We were organised, we did some really good analysis with them before the game and I think it was a brilliant performance.
'We create more chances than we’ve ever created, we’re seeing the result of that. We’re making more progressive passes into the opponent’s box than at any other point I’ve been here.
'I highlight that side because football should be fun, attacking football, and I think our attacking play right now is as good as it’s ever been. We still have work to do to convert the chances that maybe we didn’t, but that’s just me being critical.'
There was also praise for young striker Aggie Beever-Jones, who came off the bench to score in the second game in a row...
'She’s deserving of her opportunities. I trust her to go in, I think she’s got a big future ahead of her.
'We’ve invested in young players who’ve gone out on loan. She’s come back, she deserves to be in this group and I think she’s going to add quality whenever she’s called upon.'
