The Chelsea Women manager looks ahead to West Ham game and reveals need to balance her team selection…

As is inevitable when you are chasing a quadruple of trophies, the games keeping coming thick and fast for Chelsea Women. Despite that, Emma Hayes is encouraged by the current condition of her fit players, even though the squad is unusually thin due to a collection of injuries.

Our manager named an unchanged side for Tuesday’s Champions League win at Ajax, off the back of an equally good victory over Arsenal. Midweek, she indicated she will need to rotate her selection in the games ahead which begin with a WSL derby at West Ham United on Sunday. After Friday’s training session, she reported the latest news on the possibility of players returning from injury to help her with that task.

‘We had Mayra Ramirez and Nat Bjorn in the session today, but only for 30 minutes,’ Hayes revealed. ‘I don't know [if they’ll be ready]. They will be in tomorrow and we'll assess from there.

‘I thought we looked really fresh today. Surprisingly in this block of games we've looked really good. We've got a full team session tomorrow, one session to prep for West Ham, and of course we're looking forward to it.

‘We did also have an extensive injury list last year but I'm not going to moan about it. The last thing a fit and healthy player wants to hear is their manager talking about the players that are not there. It's right to respect that.

‘It's not to say I don't value those that are injured but I'm in a business where I have to focus on the result. I want to put all my attention onto those who are available and give everything I've got to them.’

Hayes went on to explain that even if she does have the option of rotating players, which she does like to do to give the whole of a squad she trusts decent playing time, it is a balancing act.

‘Sometimes it can have a detrimental effect on our rhythm and then other moments it can have an effect on fatigue. I do think there'll be changes in the next couple of games but they certainly won't be wholesale changes. We're in a good rhythm and it's important to build on that.’

On Sunday, Chelsea as league leaders take on a side second from bottom in the WSL table and a club that has lost 10 and drawn one of our previous league meetings. Hayes is clear there will be no complacency.

‘West Ham took us to 120 minutes of football in the cup and they beat Arsenal at home. They've competed really well against the top teams so absolutely no underestimation from us.

‘We love being in this position. We love the pressure on us with the game accumulations. We make no excuses and we're not victims of anything.

‘We’re in charge of our own destiny. It's important for us to have a strong mentality, a collective will, and deliver when it really matters because that's what we're about at Chelsea. I'll remind everyone again, we haven’t won a single trophy.

‘We can talk about how well it's going. The reality is it means nothing until we’ve got a trophy.’
