The chance last weekend for the team to make amends for the opening day defeat at Liverpool (the only loss of the season) was scuppered by a frozen pitch but the wait for another opportunity has not been a long one.

The FA Cup draw has sent the Reds from Merseyside back to Kingsmeadow for today’s match, which will be live streamed on our platforms at 1pm, and ahead of the high-profile tie, Emma Hayes has been reflecting on the 2-1 defeat in our away WSL meeting back in September.

‘We have learned not to carry it and take it on after that point,’ the Chelsea Women manager said.

‘No one's too good to lose and on that day, we didn't deserve that much. It was a long time ago in the world of football and this week, we have just got to build off the performance we put in against Tottenham on Wednesday night, particularly in the second half once we found our stride. It was a really good team performance so just build on that. For us, that's the priority.’

Hayes has also shared details of what she expects from a Liverpool side coached by her predecessor at Chelsea, Matt Beard.

‘His team is compact. They set up five at the back most of the time, four at the back this week against West Ham, but their principles don't change,’ she explained.

‘They are very compact from back to front, difficult to play through. You have to be patient when you play against his teams because they don't give you a lot of space.

‘We expect to dominate the ball. We expect to create the most amount of chances but breaking them down will be challenging because every time I've watched them, they are a tough outfit and one that we're going to have to implement our rotations against and have good decision-making in final third.’

When it comes to breaking down a stubborn side, Hayes knows she has players in goalscoring form with Sam Kerr again on target midweek, Fran Kirby also scoring and Erin Cuthbert claiming a goal. With plenty of firepower elsewhere as well, Hayes has spoken about the richness of her selection choices.

‘We've got amazing players and everyone's good enough to be in the starting 11 but I can only pick 11. When you don't have a big games accumulation, you want to get some continuity in the team. Sometimes it makes it tougher to make the changes.

‘But we're a squad, here for the whole season and particularly after international break, we will have a game every three days for quite a long period. Everybody has to be ready so we have to be mindful that we still have to provide opportunities across the squad, to make sure that every player manages their confidence and their form as we enter the critical phase of the season.’
