Saturday’s Chelsea Legends versus Liverpool Legends clash at Anfield is drawing very close but there is still time for some late additions to be made – with today’s news that a trophy-lifting goalkeeper, a cup-winning defender, an Academy graduate and one of our most-successful captains will be involved in the game.
Rob Green, the former England goalie who went viral with his post-match celebrations after his non-playing contribution to our Europa League final win in 2019, will be part of the squad on Merseyside for the live-streamed encounter.
Celestine Babayaro, the left-sided player who was our most-expensive teenage signing back in 1997, also plays. He was part of an exciting team under Gianluca Vialli and won the FA Cup in 2000. In his final season as a Blue, he played in our first Premier League title-winning side.
Jimmy Smith, who progressed through the Chelsea youth system and made his senior debut in 2006 will also play. He is now back at our Academy as one of the coaches of the Under-18s.
Completing the new names today is Dennis Wise who skippered Chelsea to six pieces of silverware. He will be assistant manager to Roberto Di Matteo on Saturday, taking charge of a squad that also contains Claude Makelele, Ramires, Jody Morris, Katie Chapman, Gianfranco Zola, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and many more.
The Legends match not only rolls back the years on a big rivalry – it raises money for the Chelsea Foundation and our Players’ Trust. Fans can contribute to the funds raised by signing up to watch a pay-per-view live stream via the Official Chelsea App and Chelseafc.com, with all proceeds going to the Chelsea Foundation. The broadcast will begin at 2.45pm, with the match kicking off at 3pm.
