Today’s international fixtures saw Ben Chilwell and Mykhailo Mudryk lining up on opposing sides as England dropped their first points of Euro qualifying against Poland.
England had won all of their opening four matches in qualifying for next summer’s European Championship, but had to settle for a 1-1 draw as they took on Poland, with Ben Chilwell and Mykhailo Mudryk both in their nations’ starting line-up.
It was the home side, playing in Poland due to the ongoing war in Ukraine, who took a first-half lead. It came via Arsenal’s Oleksandr Zinchenko when he turned in a cross 26 minutes in.
England were dominating possession but chances were few and far between, until Kyle Walker scored his first international goal from a brilliant Harry Kane assist just before the break to level the scores.
That was the way it remained throughout the second half, despite Bukayo Saka hitting the crossbar, and Conor Gallagher’s introduction off the bench late on wasn’t enough to change that. The Three Lions remain six points clear at the top of their group, but have played a game more than second-placed Ukraine and two more than Italy in third.
Levi Colwill was an unused substitute but still has a chance to make his senior international debut when England take on Scotland in a special friendly to mark the 150th anniversary of that fixture on Tuesday evening.
Romelu Lukaku, who is currently on loan at Roma for the 2023/24 season, captained Belgium to a 1-0 away win over Azerbaijan, also in a qualifying match for the Euros. The striker played the first hour of the game, making way for former Chelsea forward Michy Batshuayi in the second half.
It wasn’t the comfortable victory Belgium were expecting when they arrived in Azerbaijan, and they needed a large slice of luck with a deflection for the game’s only goal, but the narrow win is enough to take them top of Group F, ahead of Austria on goal difference.
At youth level Shumaira Mheuka came off the bench for England Under-17s as they registered their first point of the friendly Pinatar Arena Supercup, in a 1-1 draw with Morocco.
Mheuka wasn’t involved as they opened the mini-tournament with a defeat to Portugal, but played the final 25 minutes this time around. The Chelsea teenager came off the bench shortly after Morocco had equalised from the penalty spot and came closest to finding a winner when he met a cross in the ninth minute of added time, but he couldn’t generate enough power on his finish to beat the goalkeeper.
England will now play their third and final match of the competition against hosts Spain on Tuesday.
