As England kicked off their World Cup campaign, students from the Chelsea Foundation Coaching and Development Degree visited the Three Lions’ training centre St George’s Park to spend the day with The FA’s Mentee Development Programme.

The Mentee Development Programme, which is part-funded by Chelsea FC Foundation, looks to engage coaches from under-represented backgrounds and support them with pathways into the professional game.

Students took part in a workshop exploring the skills and attributes of transformational coaches, as well as taking the opportunity to be part of practical sessions, delivered by The FA’s coach inclusion and diversity manager Abdul Fazal, and Mentee Development Programme participants Estelle Handy and Ryman Farrell. The students were also invited on a tour of the world-class facilities at the home of the England national teams.

The Chelsea FC Foundation Coaching and Development Degree is a unique collaboration between St Mary’s University Twickenham and Chelsea FC Foundation. The degree provides students with the opportunity to develop their coaching, football development and business skills while gaining an in-depth understanding of the football industry. All students are provided with work placement opportunities within the Chelsea FC Foundation, providing them with the opportunity to gain practical experience across a range of football environments.

Conal Murnin, Chelsea FC Foundation project officer, summed up the experience: ‘We are very proud to offer unique opportunities like today to our students to support their development. To visit an incredible facility like St George’s Park has been inspiring for our students and has given them the opportunity to reflect on their coaching practice and think about their future pathways.’

Tom Howard, course lead at St. Mary’s University added: ‘The atmosphere on the day was incredible, with our students showcasing such a refreshing approach to the activities provided and interactions shared. Many of them openly shared just how impactful the day had been in developing their understanding and motivating them to pursue a career in the game. On behalf of St Mary’s, a huge thank you to Chelsea FC Foundation and The FA for providing such an opportunity, and we look forward to visiting again in the future.’
