Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong captained England Under-19s as Shim Mhueka's impressive goal helped the Young Lions to a 2-0 victory over Wales in their Euro qualifier.

England Under-19s were facing their neighbours in the countries' opening match of the elite round of qualifying for this summer's UEFA European Under-19 Championship.

Acheampong was joined in the starting XI by Chelsea team-mates Tyrique George and Kiano Dyer, while Mhueka came on as a second-half substitute and Harrison Murray-Campbell was an unused replacement.

The Young Lions were already 1-0 up courtesy of Ethan Wheatley's goal just before the hour mark when Mhueka, who came on in the 68 minute, showed great strength and quick feet in the corner of the penalty area to create the space in the box before expertly firing into the bottom corner with six minutes of normal time remaining.

The elite round will determine the seven nations who will qualify alongside hosts Romania, with countries needing to secure top spot in their respective four-team pool to progress.

New signing Mathis Amougou was also in Under-19 qualifying action as he came on in the 66th minute during France's 2-1 defeat to Spain.

And Genesis Antwi was part of the Sweden Under-18s team which drew 1-1 with a Scotland Under-19s squad that included Harrison McMahon in a friendly tournament in Pinatar, Spain.
