David Fofana and Ivory Coast Under-23s suffered their first loss at the Toulon Tournament on Saturday.

The young Chelsea striker captained his side in their second group game but they went down 1-0 to Morocco, the deciding goal, which came midway through the first half, a high-quality strike – drilled into the top corner from well outside the penalty area. The scorer was Atletico Madrid player Salim El Jebbari.

In a closely match contest, Fofana had shots blocked at the start and end of the first half, and early in the second half saw an powerful effort saved low down after had burst into the box. He also attempted to salvage a point deep into added time with a free-kick but shot wide.

In the previous match, Fofana had found the net from the penalty spot in what ended a 1-1 draw against Panama.

Ivory Coast’s final group game is against Japan on Tuesday. Just two points separate top from bottom.
