Renato Veiga made his senior international debut alongside fellow Chelsea man Pedro Neto as Portugal continued their 100 per cent winning record in the UEFA Nations League.

Portugal inflicted Poland’s first home defeat for two years as the visitors triumphed 3-1 in Warsaw, with Chelsea duo Veiga and Neto in their line-up and Joao Felix on the bench. Following the wins over Croatia and Scotland last month, the result leaves Portugal three points clear at the top of their group already, at the halfway stage.

Veiga played the whole game at centre-back as Bernardo Silva and Cristiano Ronaldo fired Portugal into a two-goal half-time lead. Poland pulled one back after the break, but a late own goal by Jan Bednarek sealed the victory for the away side, who next face pointless Scotland in Glasgow on Tuesday.

Also in the Nations League, Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella remained on the sidelines throughout as Spain beat Denmark 1-0 at home, the only goal coming from Martin Zubimendi with 10 minutes left on the clock.

At youth level, 16-year-old Shumaira Mheuka found the net as England Under-19s defeated the Netherlands 4-1 in Spain. The striker got the second of the Three Lions’ goals shortly before half-time, showing a poacher’s instincts to slot in the rebound from close range after a team-mate’s effort had been saved.

Mheuka and Tyrique George were both in England’s starting XI, with fellow Blues Harrison Murray-Campbell, Reiss Denny and Kiano Dyer joining them off the bench, as well as goalkeeper Ted Curd (currently on loan with Hampton & Richmond) an unused substitute.

Leo Cardoso was in the starting line-up for Portugal Under-19s and played over an hour as they defeated Denmark 3-1 in the same friendly tournament in Marbella, leaving the pitch with his side leading 1-0 before a flurry of late defensive errors added to the scoreline.

That follows Cardoso’s debut at this level in the last international break, and he helped Portugal make it two wins out of two in the tournament, which concludes against the Netherlands on Tuesday, when England will face France.

Marc Guiu came off the bench to play the final 13 minutes as Spain Under-19s bounced back from defeat to Germany in their opening game of a friendly tournament in Romania with a 3-2 win over Norway.

The game was finely balanced at 2-2 when Guiu was introduced, as Spain pushed for a winner. It duly arrived in the 83rd minute, saving their blushes after going two goals ahead inside the first 15 minutes only to give the lead away in the second half.
