Pedro Neto featured for the first 45 minutes of a UEFA Nations League fixture. Joao Felix’s introduction midway through the second half added impetus to the Portuguese attack. He very nearly put them ahead on three occasions before Cristiano Ronaldo did just that very late on.

Scott McTominay headed the Scots into a surprise early lead, one they held until the interval despite Roberto Martinez’s side having 16 attempts in the first half alone. One of those was a blocked effort by Pedro Neto, who was deployed on the right wing.

He was replaced by Ronaldo at half-time. Nine minutes after the restart, Bruno Fernandes drew Portugal level with a strike from the edge of the D Angus Gunn will feel he could have done better with.

Joao Felix replaced the dangerous Rafael Leao midway through the second half, lining up on the left-hand side of Portugal’s attack. He had a golden chance to put Portugal ahead after linking up delightfully with Ronaldo, but the outstretched leg of Gunn thwarted him.

The Scottish keeper did even better to save a diving header from Joao Felix, with Ronaldo’s follow-up hitting the right-hand post. He then struck the inside of the left-hand post with a header, Gunn somehow clawing the loose ball away before Joao Felix could nod it in.

However, Portugal and Ronaldo weren’t to be denied as the former Manchester United man turned in Nuno Mendes’s teasing cross with two minutes of normal time remaining.

Renato Veiga remained on the bench as he awaits his senior Portugal debut.

In Geneva, Marc Cucurella and Robert Sanchez were unused substitutes as Spain defeated Switzerland 4-1 in Geneva. Early goals from Joselu and Fabian Ruiz put the visitors in a commanding position but a red card for Robin Le Normand handed the Swiss a lifeline.

Goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic, currently on loan at RC Strasbourg, was also an unused substitute as Serbia lost 2-0 in Denmark, with Albert Grønbæk and Yussuf Poulsen the goalscorers.

Zeki Amdouni halved the deficit before the break and they pressured for an equaliser, before Spain scored twice in quick succession late on through Ruiz and Ferran Torres to secure an impressive away win.

At youth level, Ollie Harrison played the first half for England Under-18s as they drew 1-1 with hosts France before winning a penalty shootout to seal second place at the Lafarge Tournament.

Both goals came after the break in an entertaining encounter in Limoges, that was settled by a shootout the Young Lions won 2-0. Shumaira Mhueka was an unused substitute.

USA Under-17s concluded their participation in the Vaclav Jezek Cup with a 1-1 draw against Slovakia’s Under-18s. Landon Emenalo started in midfield for the US, who took the lead on the hour before being pegged back by a Slovakia side who had the better of the chances in Czechia.

In the early hours of Monday morning, Deivid Washington was a late substitute for Brazil Under-20s as they beat Mexico 3-2 courtesy of an injury-time winner. Brazil had led 2-0 before Mexico fought back and then had two players sent off, which Brazil were able to capitalise on in the dying stages.
