In his first interview after joining Chelsea, a delighted Jadon Sancho reflects on his move to the Blues and opens up on his relationship with head coach Enzo Maresca.
It’s been a busy 24 hours for our newest recruit, and Sancho is thrilled to make his move to Stamford Bridge.
Born and bred in London, Jadon is particularly excited to call the capital his home once again as he gets the opportunity to emulate some of his footballing idols and Chelsea legends.
‘I’m really excited to be here,’ Sancho smiled. ‘London is where I grew up and I’m happy to be back.
‘It's been a bit crazy. Obviously, it was the last day of the transfer window so it's expected to be a bit crazy, but I'm really happy it's all finally done.
‘Chelsea is iconic. My idols growing up were Didier Drogba and Frank Lampard and now I have the opportunity to play for this club like them. It’s a great feeling.’
Speaking about his desire to play in Blue, the 24-year-old pointed to our head coach Maresca as being key to the move.
‘I think it’s the manager who really drew me to the project,’ Sancho explained.
‘I knew him from his time with Pep Guardiola in Manchester City. He spoke to me on the phone about this project and what he was building here, and for a young player like myself it’s exciting and I can’t wait to get started.’
He believes Maresca’s style of football suits his own. He said: ‘They’re signing me for a reason and to contribute to the team, and I’m ready to do that.
‘I enjoy his style of play. The wingers when they get on the ball, he loves them to go one versus one and be direct. We play a lot of one-twos with the 10s and the striker combination plays. It’s very attractive and it’s a style that I play.’
Focusing on the talented squad he now joins, Jadon recognises a few familiar faces at the club, with one clear aim in his mind when he steps out on the Stamford Bridge pitch for the first time.
He added: ‘I know Tosin and Cole Palmer – he was younger than me when I was at City. I haven’t had a chance to speak to them yet, but I’m sure I will soon. They’re going to be looking out for me, I’m sure.
‘I want to bring goals and assists. I’m a skilful player and I want to bring excitement to the Bridge. Hopefully, it will turn out well.’
