Nicolas Jackson's Africa Cup of Nations campaign came to an end when holders Senegal were eliminated by hosts the Ivory Coast on penalties.

Senegal had topped their group to qualify for the group stage with a 100 per cent record, but were handed a tough draw against the home nation in the first knockout round.

The Teranga Lions took an early lead against the Ivory Coast when Habib Diallo smashed Sadio Mane's cross into the top corner with just four minutes on the clock.

That raised hopes they could be the one to break the holders' curse, with no defending champion having progressed beyond the first knockout round in seven consecutive Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.

Nicolas Jackson came off the bench for Senegal - just as he had in their three group stage victories - with his side still 1-0 up, but the Ivory Coast had been in control and knocking at the door ever since that early goal.

The hosts eventually found an equaliser, when VAR awarded them a penalty for a foul by former Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, which Franck Kessie dispatched with six minutes left.

That led to an additional 30 minutes of extra time and then a penalty shoot-out to determine who went through. It went against Senegal, as Moussa Niakhate struck his effort against the post while everyone else found the net, meaning Jackson's chances of lifting the trophy come to an end.
