After scoring his first Chelsea goal in last night’s dominant win over Southampton, Jadon Sancho pointed to the Blues supporters as the motivation behind another impressive victory.
An end-to-end start at St Mary’s saw us take an early lead through Axel Disasi, only for Southampton to level four minutes later.
We then pulled away as Christopher Nkunku and Noni Madueke fired us to a two-goal advantage at the interval, and further goals from Cole Palmer and Sancho in the second period helped us to a resounding 5-1 victory on the south coast.
Sancho's goal was his first for the Blues following his summer loan switch from Manchester United, and it followed the suggestion of head coach Enzo Maresca that our No.19 should go for goal more often.
‘I’m delighted,’ said Sancho on scoring his first goal for the club. ‘I finally shot! So I’m just over the moon that I got my goal.’
The sight of our players and staff celebrating with Blues supporters following a victory has become a familiar sight at Stamford Bridge and on the road this season.
And having come on as a substitute to play his part in another win to prompt those celebrations at Southampton, Sancho says the desire to reward that support motivates him and the rest of the squad.
‘I’m grateful whether I start or come on the pitch from the bench,’ he continued.
‘As long as I get some minutes and can play in front of the fans I’m delighted, but today topped it off with my goal. Obviously, the most important thing is the three points.
‘We love the travelling fans, we love the fans home and away. We appreciate them and we try to give them a performance like this so they can go home happy. So we’re just delighted with the three points.’
Those three points, coupled with our healthy margin of victory, have moved the Blues above Arsenal and into second place in the Premier League table on goal difference.
However, despite making it four consecutive wins in all competitions with 12 goals scored to just two conceded in reply, feet are being kept firmly on the ground.
‘It was a good performance,’ added Jadon. ‘I feel like we started a bit slow but then when we got the first goal we started to get into our rhythm and luckily we came away with five goals.
‘We can’t get carried away. It’s nice to be in this position, but we’re going to take it game by game because we still have a long season ahead of us.’
