Jadon Sancho has highlighted the abundance of trust and quality within this Chelsea squad, with every member united in pursuit of head coach Enzo Maresca’s vision.
The Blues return to Premier League action today, when we host west London neighbours Brentford at Stamford Bridge, looking to make it seven wins in a row in all competitions.
Sancho has played an important part in that run, netting in back-to-back league games as we beat Southampton 5-1 and then triumphed 4-3 at Tottenham Hotspur in last week’s derby.
However, the winger insists that win at Spurs, and our good form in general, is down to the unity and trust within the squad, as much as individual talent.
‘We have belief in each other,’ he said. ‘Training every day together, we know what each other can do and we have big-game players that can change a game around. We stuck to the game plan against Tottenham and continued to work.
‘We obviously have a lot of top-quality players and in training everyone thrives off each other because the intensity is so high and everyone wants to show what they can do.
‘There is competition for places and everyone wants to be starting games, so it’s good to have this competition in the squad.’
In addition to that belief in each other, it is clear there is another key unifying influence on this Chelsea squad, the leadership of our head coach. It is an authority born out of respect.
‘We’re all kind of leaders, because we all have different attributes to help each other, but the leading voice is definitely the manager,’ continued Sancho.
‘The manager is the voice of the whole team and whatever he says goes. We all buy into that.
‘He understands us and always gives us advice about what to do in our position and how to help each other out. All the players trust him and believe in him.
‘It’s always nice to feel supported, but he’s played the game as well so has a lot to offer and give advice on, about what to do and not do.’
It is unsurprising then to hear the 24-year-old echoing our head coach’s sentiments about not being distracted by our lofty second-place position in the Premier League table or talk of a title challenge.
Like the rest of the team, Sancho’s focus remains on the immediate task at hand, starting with this evening’s home derby against Brentford in the Premier League.
He concluded: ‘For us, we take it game by game. There is still a long season ahead of us so we can’t get carried away. We’re grateful to be in this position, but we’re taking it game by game.’
