Jess Carter believes that Manchester City will pose a tough challenge as the west London Blues prepare to take on the Blue side of Manchester in the semi-final of the Continental Tyres League Cup on Thursday.

With both shades of Blue level on points at the top of the Women’s Super League table, Carter is excited by the prospect of once again facing the Citizens, but this time in the FA Women’s League Cup.

Both sides have faced off against one another twice already this season and are therefore well-versed in each other’s strengths and weaknesses. The 26-year-old believes that could help the Blues heading into the final four tie, as they look to secure a place at Molineux for the showpiece event.

‘You treat every game differently, but you have to learn from when you’ve played them before – maybe things that did or did not work so that you are best prepared,’ Carter began.

‘Ultimately, you just try to implement the game plan that our coaches have put together for us. It’s about the team turning up on the day and who gets their tactics right on the day.

‘I think sometimes cup games can be a little bit different. We always try to leave everything out on the pitch and with the cup, you have that one-off chance to get through to the next round. I can imagine it being quite an aggressive game with both teams wanting to get through to the final.’

The defender also points to the contest being an extremely enticing watch as two of the best teams in the country go head-to-head for the chance of winning the first piece of silverware.

Carter continued: ‘We’re getting to that stage of the season where every competition is up for grabs and we want to be in that cup final just as much as Manchester City do.

‘We will be going there with every intention of trying to be as hard to beat as possible, whilst being tactically aware of their strengths so we can nullify them.’

Reflecting on Chelsea’s season as a whole, Carter acknowledges that the Blues potentially have another gear to find as they attack on all fronts across the domestic and European calendar.

‘I think we have had a really up-and-down season,’ she added. ‘We have been able to create some chances, but we haven’t been as clinical at times.

‘We are still focusing on being hard to beat and there is still a level that we can always try and get to. It’s about focusing on the basic things out of possession – winning our battles and doing our best to nullify their strength. Man City have some top players who play excellent football.

‘We will have to be really disciplined out of possession in order to try and keep that clean sheet against them, and then it’s about taking our opportunities when they do come.’
