Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was happy to be back on the scoresheet as her goal against West Ham United set the Blues on their way to a record-breaking sixth consecutive Women's League Cup final.
The Swedish winger fired Sonia Bompastor's side into the lead after 20 minutes at Kingsmeadow with a stunning right-footed strike from a tight angle inside the box. Sjoeke Nusken then doubled our advantage with a composed finish nine minutes later.
Rytting Kaneryd's goal was her fifth of the season in all competitions and her first since early December when we defeated Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women's Super League.
'It's been a lot of hard work behind the scenes,' Rytting Kaneryd said. 'I've been working a lot with finishing, especially, and doing a lot of extra work.
'One of my targets this season was to score more and to get more assists. I'm on a good way, but it has been a long time since I scored so I was happy about that.'
On her goal, Rytting Kaneryd continued: 'I saw the opportunity to take an extra touch and sometimes you need to take it even if you are in the box. I saw some space, took a touch and it was all about getting the goal.
'I had another opportunity in the second half where I took two touches, and that was probably not the right decision, but sometimes you just need to be calm in those situations, and I did that once at least, so I'm happy about that.'
The 2-0 win over the Hammers secured our place in a sixth consecutive League Cup final, and we will face either Arsenal or Manchester City at Pride Park on 15 March.
Rytting Kaneryd believes the squad has an extra edge this season that could help us claim victory, with the Blues having missed out on League Cup glory in the previous three seasons.
'I'm very happy about being in a final,' Rytting Kaneryd said. 'That is one of our goals this season. This year, we have something extra in this squad and in this team.'
