Chelsea striker Kai Havertz says the squad are motivated to not only get back to winning ways themselves in the Premier League, but also to extend Arsenal’s current winless run to five matches when we travel to the Emirates Stadium tonight.
Mikel Arteta’s side have not won in four league games despite winning 23 of their previous 29 contests before their current winless run.
There have been a minimum of four match goals in all of Arsenal’s last six Premier League contests and with the added factor of a London derby tonight, we could expect an enticing encounter once again. Havertz is relishing the opportunity to play his part.
‘It is a historic derby and I think Chelsea against Arsenal has always been a good game,' said Kai ahead of the 8pm (UK time) meeting. 'Normally, Chelsea are also competing for titles at this stage of the season, obviously this year that has not been possible.
‘Of course, we will try and stop Arsenal having a good time, and prevent them finishing strongly. We are going to try our best tonight to get the points.'
It is no secret that the Blues are struggling for form this season. We are yet to record a victory since caretaker manager Frank Lampard took the job on an interim basis almost a month ago now.
The German has offered an insight into the dressing room’s mood ahead of tonight’s fixture.
‘Obviously all of us have found it difficult, the whole club,' explained our No.29. 'At the end of the day, it is us players who have our faces out there. The last few months we’ve not played well, but we have six more chances to get some more points, play good football and make the fans as happy as possible.
‘It started with the ownership change, then two changes of manager during this season, a new squad. I don’t like to make up excuses, however, all of the things above have not made it easy for us.
‘We have a lot of young players with high quality in the squad now. When you want a good squad you need a mix of young and experienced. The young players need the experienced players to help them, so it is about a good mix. In the last few years we have had that,’ the striker said. ‘I hope the fans are excited for the years to come, and I hope they will be smiling more next year.'
Kai has played in 41 of our 44 matches so far this season and he has outlined where he feels most comfortable in Chelsea’s forward line.
‘Every offensive player wants to score goals and get assists,' he stated.
'As a number nine, you are the closest to goal, and people want you to score more. I am not a typical number nine, maybe I want to be more involved in the game and create a lot. Obviously, I always want to score and it is my responsibility to score more.’
