Chelsea Women’s Johanna Rytting Kaneryd was delighted with individual and collective performances as the Blues earned a crucial 2-0 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion in the Women’s Super League on Sunday.
The Swede, who joined the Blues from Swedish outfit BK Hacken this summer, was one of seven changes for the trip to West Sussex and marked her first start for the club with an impressive display, which saw her take home the Player of the Match award.
Kaneryd was deployed on the right wing and was forced to contend with difficult playing conditions, seeing several promising forward runs thwarted by standing water, but showed patience and determination to help break down a resilient Brighton side.
After the final whistle, Kaneryd reflected on a good result in challenging conditions where patience was required, praising the impact of the players who came into the starting line-up and contributed to the result.
‘I think we did a good game, we had a lot of patience in the build-up. We were struggling a little bit with the pitch, especially in the first half, but we solved it. We were attacking all the time and we did really good. We scored two goals, the players that came in had a lot of energy and it’s exactly what we needed.’
Niamh Charles and Bethany England had our best chances in the first half, before combining for the opening goal just shy of the hour mark. We went into the break all square and Kaneryd hinted at the message from the coaching team and subtle tactical tweaks which worked in our favour.
‘They were standing pretty high with their backline so definitely it was to play some balls in behind. We changed a little bit in the build-up with the positions and that was better. We got a lot of good chances from that so it was a good talk and coaching performance.’
Getting the first goal is always important and gave the Blues a welcome confidence boost with half-an-hour remaining. However, Kaneryd emphasised the importance of maintaining concentration with a slender lead intact.
‘You can never relax in those kind of games. I know the team struggled on this pitch before so of course, it’s really nice to get a goal and we really deserved it. Not until the second goal could we relax a little bit, but it’s hard to relax in those games.’
Once again, the Blues face a quick turnaround between games and return to action this Wednesday when we welcome Vllaznia to Kingsmeadow in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. Kaneryd says the focus will be on recovering well with help from the excellent support staff at the club.
‘We need to recover first and tomorrow is a new day so it’s all focus on the game in the Champions League. It’s all about recovery and we have a really good medical team and people in the club, so I’m not worried.’
As a new signing, there is always a desire to make an impact. A confident display on Sunday left Kaneryd feeling pleased with her individual performance and confident that she has more to give as the season progresses.
'I’m taking steps all the time. I really feel like I’m in good shape right now, I feel more confident and know what I can bring to this team. I’m super happy to be in this group and I feel like I can develop even more to help this team so I’m really happy!’
