Katerina Svitkova believes patience and ruthlessness will be key for Chelsea Women when they welcome Aston Villa to Kingsmeadow in the Women’s Super League today.

The Czech midfielder, who joined the Blues from West Ham United in the summer, came off the bench to score her first goal for the club during our 8-0 demolition of Vllaznia in the Champions League earlier this week.

Ahead of our return to league action against Aston Villa this afternoon, Svitkova sat down to discuss our opposition, the Women’s Super League, switching her native Czech Republic for England and settling into life here at Chelsea.

Carla Ward’s Villa side made a strong start to the season with victory over Manchester City on the opening weekend, but have lost their previous two league games. Svitkova believes this will make our opponents more dangerous, calling for us to be patient and clinical for the full 90 minutes.

‘After quite good games at the beginning from them, they have dropped two games so they will definitely want to win the game,’ she said. ‘For us, this means they probably won’t be too defensive, but they still have to think about defending more than attacking. We have to be patient, we have to create chances and be clinical, but we have to think about our back door.

‘They have really good counter-attacks, they showed it against Manchester City. I guess they will play against us like they played against City. We have to be focused every second on the pitch and play until the end of the game. It will be a hard game, but we have a great team so we will go for it!’

Moving from the Czech Republic to England presented its challenges both on and off the pitch, but Svitkova has taken them in her stride. The midfielder discussed adapting to life in London and settling into the Women’s Super League.

‘This league is totally different to the Czech league,’ Svitkova explained. 'Every team has so many good players and the league is so fast. You can win or lose against anybody which is so interesting.

'I didn’t speak English at all when I came to West Ham. At the beginning, it was really hard. I didn’t understand the girls, I didn’t understand the girls on the pitch which I struggled with. It took four of five months to get to know each other and to get to know the league, then I settled down so it was good.’

Having swapped east London for west this summer, Svitkova spoke affectionately about finding her feet at Chelsea. It’s not the first big step she has taken in her career, but it’s one the Czech international is relishing.

‘It’s amazing! Chelsea is an amazing club, it’s my favourite club. I can’t be more happy to be here. Everything here is completely different than West Ham, so it’s another jump for me, but it’s amazing and I enjoy it every day.’

A second-half substitute against Vllaznia, Svitkova didn’t take long to make her mark on the game, converting a powerful header to open her account for the club. This was a proud moment for Svitkova who gave a special mention to one team mate for their role in the build-up.

‘It was a special goal, especially because Alsu (Abdullina) had the assist and I was so happy for her. I was twice happy! We have an amazing team, amazing players, everyone cheers for each other and we fight in the game for everyone.

‘It was easier to get through the game because everyone showed good vibes and helped each other. It was quite easy to settle into the game. There was a good combination with Alsu on the left side, an amazing cross and a good goal!’

With two games remaining before another international break, starting with Villa before a trip to face Manchester United, Svitkova talked about our winning mentality and the importance of keeping the momentum going.

‘We are Chelsea, we want to win every game. For us, it’s just the winning way. We focus on every game in front of us. We work very hard in the sessions, we have good tactics from the coaches so we are prepared for every game.

'It’s good that we have a whole week of sessions before Manchester United. It will be important to prepare for the game, it’ll be quite a long way away, but everything will be prepared for us. We will be focused and play our game.’
