The nominations for the 2023 FIFA Puskas Award for the best goal in the world have been announced, with Sam Kerr’s World Cup wonder strike for Australia against England among those in the running.
It was a difficult start to the Matildas' World Cup campaign for Kerr who missed the entirety of the group stages through injury, but she returned at the last-16 stage and helped Australia to reach the semi-finals of the tournament for the very first time.
The Blues striker and Australia captain struck in their semi-final defeat to England, driving at the Lionesses' backline before unleashing an unstoppable effort, which sparked wild celebrations across the host nation.
Kerr’s excellent solo strike is among 11 goals which have been put forward for this year’s FIFA Puskas Award. The annual prize recognises the best finish in world football during the year and emphasises spectacular goals in all their glory.
There are three female players on the shortlist, with Brazil’s Beatriz Zaneratto and Colombia’s Linda Caicedo in contention after scoring impressive goals against Panama and Germany at the same tournament, and they join Kerr with hopes of claiming the ultimate prize.
The winner of the 2023 FIFA Puskas Award will be decided by the public in a poll on the FIFA website, meaning you can cast your vote for Kerr here now.
Congratulations on your nomination, Sam!
