Despite her phenomenal individual contribution to Chelsea Women’s rout of West Ham in the Continental Cup semi-final, Sam Kerr acknowledged it was a supreme collective effort that got the job so well done in east London.

Kerr bagged a four-goal haul, completing her hat-trick before the half-time whistle had even blown. It was a masterclass of attacking play against a side that had held Arsenal to a goalless draw just five days earlier, one of the reasons why Kerr was so pleased with our showing.

‘It was a really good team performance,’ she said.

‘Everyone played really well, starters, finishers, everyone did their role. When it comes off like that, it tells the story.

‘We have a lot of respect for West Ham. They took points off Arsenal during the week. They have had good results, they made it hard for City earlier in the year.

‘We know how hard goals have been to come by against them, so we just had to keep at it, which we did until the final minute.’

The result hands Chelsea – and Kerr – the chance to win a third Continental Cup following our back-to-back triumphs in 2020 and 2021.

We lost to Manchester City in last year’s final, and this time around Arsenal stand between us and a first piece of silverware this season.

‘Any time we play we are excited, especially when it’s in a final. I can’t wait to play at Selhurst Park and hopefully bring the trophy back to Chelsea.

‘I love trophies, but I love what comes after more!’ she laughed.
