Chelsea Women striker Sam Kerr praised a controlled performance as the Blues ended Manchester United’s 100 per cent record with a 3-1 victory in the Women’s Super League on Sunday evening.
Goals from Kerr, Lauren James and Erin Cuthbert set us on route to claiming a hugely valuable three points which see us leapfrog United into second place in the table, with the players now departing for the international break.
Kerr broke the deadlock on the hour mark with a ruthless edge-of-the-box finish, turning provider for James three minutes later who clinically swept home from a similar position. Alessia Russo reduced the deficit with 20 minutes to play before Cuthbert put the game beyond reach in stoppage time.
We travelled to a Man United side who had won all five of their league matches to date without conceding, but showed prowess in front of goal and resilience in defence to secure an eighth consecutive victory in all competitions.
After the match, Kerr gave her overall assessment of the performance on a cold and drizzly November evening. The Australian believes getting the opening goal and how we reacted to United reducing the deficit were key to the result.
‘The first half we were really good and just unlucky not to score. We kept them to minimal chances and in the second half, once we got that first goal, we knew there would be an influx of possession. We controlled the game for the most part other than that one goal but that happens, that’s football. We responded well and finished the game off nicely.’
After a goalless first hour, Kerr struck the first blow with a superbly taken finish to swing momentum in our favour. The forward says scoring the opening goal was the catalyst we needed and turned provider for James to score our second just three minutes later.
‘I had a horror five minutes before it! I just knew, touch and finish, that’s what the number nine is paid to do. It was nice to get the opening goal and that gave us more and more confidence. We scored the second one quickly, so that was really good.’
A quick-fire double put us in cruise control until Russo reduced the deficit with 20 minutes to play. Kerr revealed the thought process was to stay composed and stick to our principles, praising the control we had over proceedings.
‘Keep calm and keep going. They had one opportunity and it came from our mistake. I thought we controlled the game really well for the 90 minutes, other than that one moment.’
After the international break, we face a hotly anticipated London derby against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge in the WSL on Sunday 20 November. Kerr is full of admiration for our fans, showing appreciation for their support and hopes to see them turn out in numbers at the Bridge in two weeks.
‘We need them. We feel the support away and back home at Kingsmeadow. Hopefully we can pack out the Bridge. It’s a London derby, it’s always a good game against Tottenham. We need them just as much as they need us out there playing. They are always our 12th player and we need them.’
