Nominations for the 2023 BBC Women’s Footballer of the Year award have been announced with Chelsea striker Sam Kerr in the running for the coveted prize.
Kerr is one of five players shortlisted by the global panel of judges and goes up against Aitana Bonmati, Mary Earps, Alexandra Popp and Fridolina Rolfo for the award.
The 30-year-old is among the contenders for the second year in a row and was the runner-up in 2022. The winner of the ninth edition of this prestigious award will be announced on 28 November. Voting is now open to the public and you can cast your vote for Sam here.
2022/23 was another remarkable season for Kerr, who netted 29 goals in 38 appearances for the Blues on our way to the Double. She reached a personal milestone with her 100th appearance for the club during our FA Cup fifth-round victory over Arsenal at Kingsmeadow in February.
Individual plaudits saw Kerr scoop the Chelsea Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards, FA Women’s Super League Player of the Year at the London Football Awards for the second time and she became the first player to win the Football Writers’ Association Women’s Footballer of the Year prize twice in a row.
It was an eventful summer for Kerr and Australia at the Women’s World Cup on home soil. An injury in the build-up saw the Matildas skipper miss the entirety of the group phase, but she returned at the round of 16 to help her country to the semi-finals for the very first time.
Kerr’s strike for the hosts in their semi-final defeat to England, an unstoppable long-range effort after a driving run at the Lionesses defence, has been nominated for the 2023 FIFA Puskas Award, leaving Kerr with two outstanding nominations after her exploits for club and country.
Congratulations on your nomination, Sam!
