As he closes in on a first Chelsea appearance, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has discussed working with Enzo Maresca and what the Blues head coach is looking for from his creative midfielders.
Dewsbury-Hall, 25, signed from Leicester City last month but recovery from injury has delayed his Blues debut on our US Tour so far.
However, Maresca told the media ahead of our meeting with Club America on Wednesday that the midfielder, who he previously coached at Leicester, could be involved against the Mexican champions.
And Dewsbury-Hall has confirmed he is raring to go after missing out on both the Wrexham and Celtic games.
‘I’m a good place now. I had a little problem during the off season, but thankfully I've worked hard.
‘I'm at a place now where I've been training with all the lads for a couple of weeks now.
‘So I think I'm ready now to get some minutes in pre-season - hopefully it’ll come against Club America.’
The pair have already achieved outstanding results working together – Dewsbury-Hall was named in the EFL Championship Team of the Year as Leicester City won promotion to the Premier League last season.
That familiarity has already minimised any potential disruption from the midfielders late start to pre-season.
‘I already knew a lot of the gaffer’s principles,’ he added. ‘So even though I wasn't training, I could still talk to the lads about what we were working on.
‘Now I've come back in, I already know what lads have been doing, the movement patterns and everything, so it's made it easier in that sense.’
Even early into his Chelsea reign, Maresca has already shown he wants his sides to dominate possession, inverting full-backs into midfield to control the play.
With advanced creative midfielders vital to this system, Dewsbury-Hall is well aware of the potential demands, should he be given the opportunity to perform an attacking role.
For much of his career a box-to-box player, last season provided his best return to date, in terms of attacking numbers, finishing up with 15 assists and 12 goals.
‘I think he [Marseca] just wants a player that knows the role well,’ added Dewsbury-Hall. ‘Who knows what positions to pick up in possession - and someone that can contribute in terms of goals and assists.
‘That's a big part of his number eights. He wants them to be involved in the attacking play, getting in the box and knowing which positions to take up.
‘And also out of possession when it comes to pressing, he wants you to be aggressive and press high up the pitch.
‘I think if you have those fundamentals, you're a good candidate for the role. And obviously he can switch it and change the role, so we'll see what he does.’
By making a high-profile summer switch to Stamford Bridge immediately after a title-winning season at Leicester, there are echoes of Dewsbury-Hall following the path of former Blues midfield star N’Golo Kante.
And our new recruit admits the France international has been the source of inspiration long before his own move to west London.
‘If I could follow any of the footsteps he [Kante] took in his career, I'd be a happy man because he was world class for this club.
‘I learned a lot from him when he was at Leicester and then again watching him when I was a young lad, when he was at Chelsea.
‘He's a great example of a humble player that works hard to find that consistency and has done really, really well for himself.’
