A record crowd for any European Championships game played a decisive role in England getting the better of Germany on Sunday according to Fran Kirby and Ann-Katrin Berger.

Over 87,000 people were at Wembley with the vast majority of those inside the national stadium cheering on the Lionesses, who were trying to win the trophy for the first time.

Our keeper Berger was on the bench for Germany, and in her analysis of the outcome she couldn’t help but notice the impact the fans had on proceedings.

‘I’m obviously a little bit disappointed because our team was really, really good and we deserved it as well, but the crowd were unbelievable,’ said Berger.

‘Maybe that was the last little push why England had more than us.’

Kirby, who enjoyed such a fine tournament, agreed with her Chelsea team-mate when it came to the impact the Wembley crowd had.

‘They really spurred us on,’ said Fran.

‘Times were tough out there, Germany are an amazing side, it’s a massive credit to the way they set up that they made it extremely difficult. The crowd got us over the line.

‘I’m really happy. It’s an amazing feeling, an amazing memory to have now, and doing it at Wembley was incredible.

‘Hopefully we have generated the popularity and now can get the fans to come down and support us next season.’
