Frank Lampard says Chelsea’s younger players must first impress in training before being considered for a place in his matchday squad.
The Blues have three Premier League contests remaining of the 2022/23 season, with trips to both the blue and red sides of Manchester coming before we host Newcastle United on the final day.
Lewis Hall was handed a start in Saturday’s draw with Nottingham Forest and Lampard says other young players looking for chances in our remaining trio of fixtures must have the same drive and work ethic at Cobham as Hall has shown to be in contention.
‘They may be looked at in the next few games. Of course, we have to try and get results for ourselves so I have to think about that, and also putting out a strong team,' Lampard said.
‘It all comes back to how people train through the week and what they show you. I don’t think you hold your head up among the squad if people are not training to make you put them in the team.
‘When you put players in, it is not a gift. Players have to earn that. If they do that and show it, like Lewis Hall who has done well, he gets his place. With big numbers in the squad, the younger players have to compete to get their chance.
‘We will see though. They will get opportunities.’
